Thing 7: Online Collaboration Tools

11/26/08 I have sent my email requests to be added as an online contributor to make edits to the documents. I encountered a little communication error with Item #1 - I was not able to make edits prior to sending an email request for the Google docs. I clicked the "request to be added" link, and the also sent an email. This may have been redundant, but I wanted to make sure my request went through so that I could complete my Thing 7. I will revisit this blog entry when I receive my ok to proceed.

Thing 5: Beyond MyFaceSpaceBooking

I actually set up my Plurk account some time ago and just realized that I had not blogged about it.

Blog Prompts

1. Which social journal did you choose? Why?
I Chose Plurk because it was promoted as being good for beginners. I am certainly a beginner and Twitter seemed a little out of my league, or rather not exactly what I was ready to do.

2. What is unique about the online journaling experience?
It is very immediate. Real time. And at the same time deceptive. Are people really promoting themselves as they really are or are they making themselves into something completely fabricated. I guess the most unique thing about the online journaling experience is that there doesn't seem to be any checks and balances.

3. Can you see this having some application to school work or professional development?
If I was in school or working in an environment where it was to my personal advantage to promote my projects or images I could see this being a great source of free advertising.

4. What are some ways that these tools could be used for evil, instead of good?
As I mentioned earlier there doesn't seem to be any checks or balances in online promotion. It would be just too easy to promote yourself or others in a false light. And once it is out there it can be changed and morphed into anything someone wants it to be with the original source never being revealed or removed.

Thing 6: Digg & Reddit...[et al].

Blog Prompts

1. How can you use Digg to collect research for your next report or design project?
Find an article, digg it, and create a history. Customize the article you want to see.

2. How can you use Digg to establish your reputation and credibility?
By choosing articles and recommending them or burying them. Activly participate and do it a lot. Also build a network so that you can do this on an even larger scale.

3. How can you connect your other social media circles to Digg and increase your popularity?
By creating a profile and adding links to you Facebook or Myspace page. Give your opinions about articles. Add your friends and communicate.

4. Reddit is using Twitter. Discuss what combining the experience means to you in terms of saving your oh so "precious time"?
This helps refine and find the exact things that you are looking for. It allows an even more substantial network to share information to your specific interest.

5. How can you ensure that information on an open source website like Reddit is credible?
You can't, not really. You can click the links to who posted articles and in essence work your way backwards, but unless you do a lot of footwork" yourself you have to either trust or not trust. It is the same for the old fashioned methods of reporting it is just that there are more established checks and balances in place.

Challenge (optional)

Dig deeper into these social media sites by creating an account in one or more of them. Each site offers suites of tools that allow you to comment, chat, create your own news column, and more. Having an account lets you be a participatory member of that community.1. Create the account(s) and explore the tools.2. Blog about the various tools and any uses you see for your library or media center. Let us know what you do!

Thing 2 revisited

I haven't been able to work on my 16 Things lately as work ebbs and flows with business, but I wanted to acknowledge that I had figured out Thing 2!

I am getting better at this. I have also started to follow some other blogs and am learning from what I see out there.

Thing 4: Social Media

Well I already have a Facebook account so I'm doing better than I thought at this "technologically advanced" thing!

Now to get to the assignment questions!

Blog Prompts:
1. Now that you have a profile on Facebook or MySpace, how will you share information about yourself to meet other students at Ai and start to build your network?
I have found that I really don't have the time in my life right now to keep up to date on my Facebook account so I haven't built up my profile. It is tough to know what I want to share because I am a very private person (even though some would be surprised to hear this). I like to share information, but there is a fine line between what is safe or healthy for others to know about you and what is not. I think at this time I will just share some personal things on a surface level.

2. Keeping in mind that employers use social networks as a recruiting tool, how will you use Facebook or MySpace to promote yourself to potential employers?
I'm not sure that this will be the case for me at this time. The line of work that I am in doesn't really call for this. I can see that if I decide to go back to school and persue a different line of work that this would be a great tool. Let them come to you as opposed to you taking everything to them.

3. How will you use Facebook or MySpace to build your professional network?
I'm not really that interested in using these methods for a professional network. It is too eay for others to make incorrect assumptions about you and if you are not there to correct it you might be set up to fail. At this time I do not plan to use Facebook to build my professional network.

4. What interests and personal details will you share with your circle?
At the most I might share big events and photos. Personal details deserve to be shared individually with others.

5. How is professional networking different from social networking?
You have to be much more careful of what you put out there. Professional networking is networking with a purpose. Social networking is much more general, the lines are more blurred.

Thing 3: Online Communication

This one I have already completed since I am one of the staff here at AiM that resets passwords for students. I have my ols emails forwarded onto my school email address so I never miss a thing! While a lot of people feel that the ols website could be better formatted I do believe that it is an invaluable tool. I wish when I was in college we had school email accounts and communication devices like this. It would have saved me may a headache trying to find my paperwork every quarter that I received at orientation to try and plan my classes to register for!

Thing 2: Set Up an RSS Account and Add Feeds

I'm hitting a few snags with this one, but I'm still working on it. I'll get back to you when I've figured it out.
